What these calculators do and do not do
Every tool on this site applies published accounting formulas to the numbers you type. The arithmetic is checked and the working is shown so you can verify it. What the tools cannot do is know anything about your business.
They do not account for your VAT scheme, your stock valuation method, seasonal discounting, returns, shrinkage, foreign exchange movement or the way your accountant classifies a particular cost. A margin figure here is only as good as the cost figure you put in.
When to talk to a professional instead
Speak to a qualified accountant or a regulated adviser before you act on any of these numbers in the following situations.
- Setting prices that determine whether the business remains solvent.
- Preparing figures for a lender, an investor or a company sale.
- Anything touching VAT registration, the flat rate scheme or the margin scheme for second-hand goods.
- Working out taxable profit, which is not the same as the accounting profit shown here.
